Thank you for working with your child on their homework! I have loved listening to them share about their likes, dislikes, hobbies, and more. We have had a great first week together and I am looking forward to a fabulous year!
*Classroom Community- We have spent time the first week setting up and establishing our classroom culture, rules and procedures. I am sending home the PBIS matrix as a reminder. We have been discussing what it looks like to be responsible, respectful and safe in the classroom and in other areas of the building.
*Folders/Planners- Please check these daily and return them. The Folders should be emptied each night and the planners signed.
*Homework- I sent home their first homework log today. It is for the rest of the month. Please return it to school on September 27th. They should be reading 20 minutes per night. This is to build good reading habits. If they cannot read 20 minutes one evening due to other obligations, please just double up on another day. I will go over the homework more on Meet the Teacher night, but I typically just send home a reading log and spelling words. There are occasionally projects and work that is missing that will be sent home.
Word Study- The 4th graders started their first word study lesson today. The list is long and short vowels. There is a copy of the word list in their folders. Each morning they will complete practice pages using these words. The test will be on Friday. I will discuss word study further at Meet the Teacher night. For now, all of them are the same list as we begin to learn the word study procedures. They took a spelling assessment and they will eventually move into small groups for word study.
Social Studies- In class, we have begun working on the regions of the United States. The fourth graders will be learning about the geography of each region, as well as, climate. They are completing an information packet for each region as we go through the book.
Math-The first chapter of math is focused on place value review. The 4th graders are using place value concepts to break numbers apart, and compare numbers. They will also be adding and subtracting using regrouping and ungrouping (borrowing and carrying). While this concept is a review, it can be a challenging concept. Any extra practice at home will be helpful.
Reader’s Workshop – The fourth graders are just getting routines established for both reader’s and writer’s workshop this week. They will be working on reading for longer periods of time, choosing just right books, and some thinking strategies. In addition, we have begun the first story in their Journey’s program, Because of Winn Dixie. The Journey’s book only contains the first chapter of Winn Dixie. I hope to come back to the chapter book later in the year.
Writer’s Workshop- In writing, they are working on publishing their very first piece of writing which will be on display for parents on Thursday.
